Japanese has two types of adjective, which are いadjective and なadjective. For example, “あつい” “さむい” are いadjectives, and ”ひま” ”しずか”are なadjectives. Basically, the last character of いadjective is “い”. On the other hands, the last character of なadjective is other than “い”.
いadjective: あつい(hot) さむい(cold) たかい(expensive) やすい(cheap) たのしい(fun)
なadjective: ひま(free) しずか(quiete) にぎやか(lively) べんり(convenient) ハンサム(handsome)
However, there are exceptions for なadjective (Because Japanese really likes exception). For instance, “ゆうめい” “きれい” are なadjectives despite the last character are “な”.
I don’t know the reason! Please ask to our ancestors.
This is the first trap when foreigners learn Japanese adjectives, but it’s very important to recognize なadjective and いadjective. Because the conversion rules are different when changing to the negative or past tense, or connecting with a noun depends on which adjective is.
For example…
いadjective+Noun: あつい ひ(hot day) /たかい パソコン(expensive computer)
なadjective+Noun: ひまな ひ(free day)/べんりな パソコン(convenient computer)/
*ゆうめいな やま(famous mountain)/きれいな やま(beautiful mountain)
Do you feel stress⁇ Don’t worry, the exceptions are not so many. You can memorize them step by step!
