What’s いadjective and なadjective ?

Japanese has two types of adjective, which are いadjective and なadjective. For example, “あつ” “さむ” are いadjectives, and ”ひ” ”しず”are なadjectives. Basically, the last character of いadjective is “い”. On the other hands, the last character of なadjective is other than “い”.

いadjective: あつ(hot) さむ(cold) たか(expensive) やす(cheap) たのし(fun)

なadjective: ひ(free) しず(quiete) にぎや(lively) べん(convenient) ハンサ(handsome)

However, there are exceptions for なadjective (Because Japanese really likes exception). For instance, “ゆうめ” “きれ” are なadjectives despite the last character are “な”.

I don’t know the reason! Please ask to our ancestors.

This is the first trap when foreigners learn Japanese adjectives, but it’s very important to recognize なadjective and いadjective. Because the conversion rules are different when changing to the negative or past tense, or connecting with a noun depends on which adjective is.

For example…

adjective+Noun: あつ ひ(hot day) /たか パソコン(expensive computer)

adjective+Noun: ひま ひ(free day)/べんり パソコン(convenient computer)/

*ゆうめい やま(famous mountain)/きれい やま(beautiful mountain)

Do you feel stress⁇ Don’t worry, the exceptions are not so many. You can memorize them step by step!

Let’s memorize adjectives together!
